When Mexican and Civil War soldiers mustered out of service, many regiments turned their flags over to the state of Ohio. The General Assembly authorized the purchase of glass cases to display battle flags in the Statehouse. Loren G. Windom was born in 1905. During his military career he was a National Guard officer and advanced through the grades to major general and became the adjutant general of Ohio in 1959. During World War II he saw action in the Philippines. In civilian life he graduated from Ohio State University College of Law and later became an assistent United States Attorney of the Southern District of Ohio, 1937-1940 and 1946-1959.
